A long travel day, but well worth it when you end up at the Hotel Rieser in the Austrian alps. Â A fantastic hotel, run by Ernst und Gabi Rieser. Â Seriously, book a trip. Â Tell ’em I sent you. Â It won’t get you anything, but you’ll be there, and that’s enough.
As for the sketch itself, there’s not much to it. Â Just a bit of lettering practice inspired by their logo. Â Like I said, it was a long day…

Sitting at LAX this evening waiting for a flight. Â Airports, I’ve found, are not so great for finding things to draw. Â That’s how you end up with a sketch like this.

My wife and I have a friend who loves castles — particularly Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria.  Today, we had reason to give her a card, but we didn’t have many on hand.  Then I struck upon the idea of sketching this on a piece of paper and folding it into a card.  Thankfully it was a hit!

My wife and her friend were in Venice last year and snapped this photo of a friendly older guy just watching people go by. Â It’s a cool photo, so I’d thought I try a little version of it.

This is a quick little pencil-and-brush-pen sketch based on a photo I took a couple years ago on a visit to the Isle of Skye. Eilean Donan Castle, to be specific. You can Google it if you want to check my work. But you probably shouldn’t do that. Let’s just pretend it looks exactly like this.

It’s always interesting to me to see how tiny things can totally change the character of a drawing. Â I have different sketch from this evening where the same model looks about 10 years older than in real life. Â But here, a rushed job of shading leaves a couple underdeveloped areas and a little stray line, resulting in a softer, rounder face that’s about 10 years younger than the real one.

Art Center is back in session, and that means more drawing workshops! Â It’s crazy how quickly one can get rusty. Â Did a few two-minute poses, then several threes. Â Some of the three-minute drawings were okay, but in the final analysis, [insert terrible pun referencing post title].

Just took my cousin to the airport for a visit to the motherland. Â Best way to get there: Qantas A380. Â What’s that you say? Â You want to see the inside? Â You got it.

Today, I drew a forward-looking trumpet. Â You know, just because.

P.S. Yes, horn enthusiasts, I realize these valves aren’t exactly accurate. Â Hold your letters, please.
