#214 – Heracles Hulme
#210 – All caught up!
Twitter followers had to sift through about a dozen posts today as I caught up from my recent trip. Â But we’re back on track now — and in the 200s already! Â Thanks, everyone, for all your support!
(And yes, I realize this is another bizarre, inaccurate, and borderline creepy self-portrait. Â Thankfully, I’ve still got 150+ chances to try again…)

#206 – Built for Speed(o)
Just renewed my membership at the Caltech gym, in the hopes of exercising (and especially swimming) more in the year to come. Â And of course, thinking about getting back in the pool was reminding me of my high school swim team days. Â But not to worry, fellow pool-goers: Â I won’t be going back to the miniscule Speedo.

#182 – Bounding ahead
Hard to believe, but I’m just about to cross the halfway mark –Â thanks for the support, everyone!

P.S. – Sketch confessional: after my first pass at the hair, I had to get out the eraser to make the hairline a little more accurate. Didn’t want anyone to call me out on it.
#151 – Companion sketch for #143
This is another quick mirror sketch, similar to Sketch #87, but done with the other end of the brush pen. Â I like that the drawing style is considerably more decisive than the previous version. Â The eyes are stlll a bit dull, but then again, I usually don’t sparkle with vivacious energy while staring in the bathroom mirror. Â Usually.

#110 – The good life
#87 – Why the long face?
#71 – Hyperdramatic self-pity
This is the self-portrait concept I did for class (based on Sketches #65 & #70). Â It ended up being a lot more pathetic-looking than originally intended. Â I wasn’t trying to be such a sad sack — just trying to illustrate the occasional frustration with creative blocks and/or not being artistically proficient enough to execute my concepts the way I want to.
But enough whining. Â The only thing that will fix that is more sketching…

#69 – Supercreep! Supercreep!
Yeah, so this was a hilariously failed experiment. Â Without a doubt the worst thing I’ve done. Â Oh actually, no. Â The version that immediately preceded this one was possibly even creepier.
Anyway, I figured out several causes of problems:
– eyes too big and too far apart
– face not long enough
– too many line strokes intended to refine eye shape just end up looking like eyeliner
– perhaps most problematically: drew it one half at a time without really stepping back often enough to see how the whole thing was coming together.
Yeah, so this will definitely have to be a redo later on in the year. Â Oh, and sorry for haunting your dreams tonight.
