This week, I have a sketchbook assignment in class to draw a bunch of different facial expressions. These were some quickly scribbled ideas for that.
This gives me an idea. Please, someone out there: do me a great amusement and and take up the challenge of snapping photos of yourself making these faces. That’s all I ask. Just take 25 pictures of yourself looking like a weirdo and send them to me. It is a simple (if bizarre) request. If you have enjoyed at least 25 of this year’s sketches, here’s your chance to return the favor. I anxiously await your contributions!

Pretty great Sunday morning — Kelly and I went for a walk to get some breakfast, then just kinda kept walking. Â By the time we got home, six hours had gone by. Â Not bad for a pregnant woman!
(Also, I sure hope this visual reference makes sense to people, because if it doesn’t, this must look like a mighty weird drawing!)

Late tonight I felt like staying up and playing some old 80’s video games — but I still needed a sketch for the day. Â First things first.

Just a couple of quick character ideas for a class project.  We’re storyboarding a section of a screenplay that calls for the following: Bill, the retired cop and (spoiler alert!) dead body; Charlie, the thirtysomething family man; and Daryl, the heavyset local drunk/thug-for-hire.  It’s sure to be an upbeat, family-friendly romp.

I recently watched an interesting presentation about creativity. Â Within it is a creative exercise that challenges you to: a) imagine a picture of a bear; b) think of a different bear; c)Â dig deeper and attempt to conjure a third visual of a bear. Â It gets increasingly difficult, but also requires creative thinking.
Anyway, I was thinking about that when I drew these. Â I took the idea pretty literally and tried to come up with three different ways of drawing something. Â In this case, I substituted the bear with a monkey (something that I’ve long been terrible at drawing from imagination). Â It was an interesting challenge. Â Later I noticed that my monkeys got progressively happier and more active. Â I guess that’s a good sign?

Went with a bunch of other video and visual FX people on a tour of Dreamworks Animation today. Â They do a lot of very cool work there, especially in character design. Â I drew this based on a life-sized statue that was in one of their lobbies.

Returning to the black paper stock for today’s sinister sketch.
Today was my last day of a nice 11-day break from work. Â So did I go out and do something adventurous? Â Of course not. Â I got together with a couple of friends and watched a back-to-back-to-back triple feature of Star Wars Episodes 4, 5 & 6. Â A good time. Â So here’s little tribute to the role so big it required three actors. Â And a stunt double. Â And later, apparently a little kid. Â And a petulant-sounding twentysomething. Â But let’s try not to think about those last two.

P.S. This sketch is based on a common photo found online — one for which I can’t find any copyright info.

Tried something different this evening — wanted to see if I could do a bunch of different animals in a cohesive style. Â These are just basic characterizations, but it would be interesting to try some other animals or people as well and see how that would work.

I did a series of very quick sketches inspired by random Flickr images this evening. Â This was one of the simplest, but I like it better than the others. Â It’s a variation on this photo.
