Switching it up today with a white charcoal drawing. Â This was inspired by a scene in The Day of the Jackal, which I was watching earlier this evening.

My wife’s half-joking idea for today’s sketch: “Draw your glasses without having them on.”  “Piece of cake,” said the foolish husband. Behold the price of hubris. I done forgot: I cain’t see real good.

I didn’t feel satisfied with yesterday’s sketch — and if any subject deserves a repeat visit, it’s this kind and insightful man. Â This simplified charcoal sketch is based on a photo of him on one of his many Alpine hikes. Â I will long remember the times we got to spend with him there.

Got sad news today of the loss of a fine man and great example to many.

This was done in honor of the USC/UCLA game I spent forever trying (and failing) to find on TV tonight. Â Should’ve snatched up my cousin’s extra ticket when I had the chance. Â Oh well. Â At least we won!

A couple months ago, I was in Austria along with several good friends. Here are three of them, as photographed there by a fourth, the great Sarah Welch.  The likenesses are kinda iffy, but hey, it’s “Sketch 365,” not “Perfect Reproduction 365.”  Oh, and if the one in the center looks familiar…

We’re heading for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow at my wife’s family’s place. They’ve hosted everyone for years, and always do a great job. We were thinking about getting them some kind of thank-you gift, and then my wife came up with the idea of me sketching something for them. They’re labrador people, so hopefully they’ll like it.

Dropped in at another figure drawing workshop for a while this evening. Â I’m so rusty though, that all my drawings were really weak. Â Of all the model’s poses, this one seemed to fit best.

Just as I was trying to come up with something to draw, I heard from a friend offering to bring homegrown habañeros from Texas.  I signed right up — and got out the charcoal pencil for a quick sketch.

Saw a great collection of photos today from the 2010 World Fencing Championships. Â I thought the energy in the poses was really cool, so I started doing really basic versions of them for practice. Â As I drew more and more of them, I decided to arrange them into a basic narrative. Â (Sketches are based on Reuters and AFP photos by Jacky Naegelen, Franck Fife, Bertrand Langlois and Francois Mori — all available here.)
