#187 – Venetian window dressing

VenetianMy wife and her friend were in Venice last year and snapped this photo of a friendly older guy just watching people go by.  It’s a cool photo, so I’d thought I try a little version of it.

#186 – Castles in the Skye

Eilean Donan CastleThis is a quick little pencil-and-brush-pen sketch based on a photo I took a couple years ago on a visit to the Isle of Skye.  Eilean Donan Castle, to be specific.  You can Google it if you want to check my work.  But you probably shouldn’t do that.  Let’s just pretend it looks exactly like this.

#172 – Some sort of research

Some kind of researchI wonder how long it will be before we look at a picture like this and say, “Can you believe we used to work that way?”  “Yeah, remember ‘laptops?'” “And ‘keyboards?'” “And ‘mice?'”

#169 – The wired world

The wired worldI’m not really happy with all of these, but I’m putting them all up because of the way the three together struck me.  Lacking any ideas of what to sketch tonight, I went on Flickr and looked at randomly picked photos from the last seven days.  When I saw one I liked, I sketched it, then did so twice more.  After a bit of research, it seems these photos (clockwise from top right) were taken by people in Italy, Greece, and I believe, Qatar.  And all posted to Flickr in the last week.  Hello, the future — you are weird.

#166 – Die Radfahrer

Bike rideBack to the fine line pen — this time drawing from a photo.  Here, Ms. Punchingbag and Mrs. Sketch 365 take to the Austrian bikeways.  Looking forward to doing this again soon!

#146 – Yarrabin

YarrabinMy aunt is passing through town this weekend, and brings with her more great photos from my grandmother in Australia.  The writing on the back of this photo says that my aunt, mother and grandfather are baling hay on the family farm — but I think it’s clear who’s doing most of the work…

#141 – The homecoming

The homecomingThis is another quick sketch from the storyboard collection I’ve been doing at work.  The idea here is that rock samples would get collected from Mars, and then be put in a little rocket and sent back to Earth.  So here, a recovery team converges on the re-entry capsule, which has touched down somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.

Of course, the real deal would probably be more involved than four dudes in a pickup truck — but I’ll let someone else figure out that part.  And the whole part where samples are collected.  And that bit with the automated rocket launch from the surface of a planet millions of miles away.  I’ll just stick with the pencil sketches.

#108 – Indoor/outdoor

Hotel entranceDrawn poolside at the hotel — this was a fun one to do.  And of course, vacation means you can spend an hour on a sketch if you want to…

#107 – Red rocks

Waimea Canyon

On the beautiful island of Kauai this week for a little vacation.  On our first full day here, we went on a 12-mile hike around some of the state park areas in the northwest of the island.  This sketch was done at lunchtime, from an spot overlooking the north end of Waimea Canyon.  (For any other geography nerds, we were sitting right here.)
