#209 – “A dirty little secret”

BrainHad a discussion with a friend today about the tremendous capacity of the human mind.  When I sat down this evening to sketch something, that’s what I was thinking of.  So I drew this based on a photo online.  But the longer I sat drawing this physical object, the more insufficient it seemed to represent the concept.  It reminded me of this quote from UPenn psych professor Stephen Morse: “Here’s a dirty little secret: We have no idea how the brain enables the mind.”  (More on that notion here.)

#181 – Leavin’ on a (cartoonishly oversized) jet plane

Airbus A380Just took my cousin to the airport for a visit to the motherland.  Best way to get there: Qantas A380.  What’s that you say?  You want to see the inside?  You got it.

#179 – Master blaster

TrumpetToday, I drew a forward-looking trumpet.  You know, just because.

P.S. Yes, horn enthusiasts, I realize these valves aren’t exactly accurate.  Hold your letters, please.

#146 – Yarrabin

YarrabinMy aunt is passing through town this weekend, and brings with her more great photos from my grandmother in Australia.  The writing on the back of this photo says that my aunt, mother and grandfather are baling hay on the family farm — but I think it’s clear who’s doing most of the work…

#144 – Brand loyalty

Canon PowerShot SD870Another soulless product illustration!  Sorry, I wasn’t feeling particularly creative tonight, so we’re left with another “nearest object” sketch.  But it’s all good practice.  Plus, even though it’s a dinky pocket-cam, it’s still a Canon.  So perhaps Ben and Sean can forgive my earlier indiscretion.

#140 – The art library

4 GBThis is how all of Sketch 365 (and then some) fits on my keychain.  Hello, the future!  Now make with the hoverboard.

#135 – Look sharp!

SharpenerAnother “grab-the-nearest-object” sketch.  This little thing has been instrumental to almost all of the prismacolor pencil drawings on this site.  In fact, this drawing itself was done with a prisma pencil, so I actually had to use this sharpener while drawing it.  Hey, I should have drawn the actual pencil inside it.  And then me holding that pencil in my hand.  And then my actual pencil drawing my own hand.  And then, inevitably, this.

#128 – Shady characters

Shady characterI did a few different sketches today, and this one based on a magazine photo turned out the most normal (even if he does look a bit crazed).  The other three were:

1) a figure drawing workshop sketch of a guy who my wife said looked like he should be the front end of a centaur;
2) a different sketch from a magazine photo that ended up looking like an old man in a water polo cap; and
3) a weird little mistake that I’ve dubbed “Blackbeard del Giacomo.”

Somehow I can’t seem to resist sharing that last little bonus outtake.  If you can guess its backstory, you win a yet-to-be-determined-but-sure-to-be-amazing prize.
