Sketch 365 – by Scott Hulme

Okay, I know this looks bad, but here’s the story: we were waiting for a table at Panda Inn, and I needed something to sketch.  Above the bar hangs a group of masks, of which these are two.  Unfortunately, when I finished my sketches, I realized they looked not so much like masks as like offensive caricatures.  That’s why I added the lettering to the right (and this overwrought, apologetic caption).

Actually, I’ve been trying to avoid drawing anything that is itself a representation (like sketching a photo, sculpture, or other piece of art).  If only I’d stuck to that rule, I never would have drawn these things!

I think my sister-in-law was getting tired of all the boring cones and cylinders.  So she challenged me to do something a little more involved for the last of the Palm Springs product sketches.  Pretty happy with the shading of this, though I realized when I finished that the proportions are kind of off.  There’s no way for a coffeemaker with that small a reservoir to fill a pot that size.  Oh well.  Pretend you didn’t notice that.

Messed up a few things here — like the handle, and its shadow that shouldn’t actually be visible.  But the rest of the shape reads pretty well.  Still doing more simple product shapes for class.  Actually, this mid-century-modern vacation home in Palm Springs is full of cool, simply shaped, modernist lamps, furniture, etc.  Good place to be working on this kind of assignment.

In Palm Springs this week for a little family vacation.  Basically eating, drinking, swimming and sketching.  I have to do several of these product sketches for class this week, so I’ll get in plenty of marker practice.

Had lunch today with some friends and family, and was able to fit in a very quick sketch of this centerpiece.  Should have used graphite rather than a prisma pencil, but hey, now I know better.

I like that this project will provide certain souvenirs of events throughout the year.  Today’s was an important one: a get-together and memorial for Mr. Jack McKinney.  Huge thanks to the McKinney family for opening their beautiful place for this special night.  Mr. McKinney will be missed.

Nothing fancy — just more simple practice stuff.  The idea here is to define a bunch of different forms using shadow rather than a perspective view.  Some are a little off, but I think for the most part, the shapes come through.  I’ll look for something more interesting tomorrow.

Sketched these in class tonight.  Asked the instructor for any recommendations.  He said, “Yeah, you went past the center line on this lamp shade.  Unforgivable, dude.  Look at this — this is impossible.  You see?  It doesn’t work.  And this over here wouldn’t look like that.  There would be more light right here.  Good though.”  I like this guy.
