#322 – The bitter loneliness of public transit

People in environments 1Working on a series of drawings for class.  The assignment: 30 different scenes of people in environments, hopefully with some sort of emotional element to them.  Seems the first two had an accidental theme develop.

#321 – Apply grease liberally to palms

Goodfellas pt. 2Homework time: a continuation of the Goodfellas storyboard from the other day.  If you want to follow along: kid appears before judge; mob lawyer flashes judge a look; kid walks free; De Niro slips kid some cash for a job well done in not ratting out the others; De Niro and kid exit courtroom into welcoming arms of mob boss Paul Sorvino and his cadre of ne’er-do-wells.  (Followed by the next establishing shot of the Idlewild [later JFK] airport.)

#319 – Not so good fellas

Goodfellas pt. 1Just started a new class in storyboarding this evening.  Did these as part of an exercise in class, quickly sketching frames from the beginning of Goodfellas.  Not my kind of movie — but certainly good for sketching practice.  That Scorsese fellow knows a thing or two about shooting films.  Take it from me, that guy’s gonna be big.

#318 – Ups & downs

Roller coasterThis house-buying stuff is stressful.  I’ve been investigating the property, talking to people, getting an inspection today, etc.  From minute to minute the outlook seems to be constantly changing…  “Oh, that’s a good sign.”  “Oh, that sounds scary.”  “Oh, but that’s good news.”  “Oh, but that could be a big problem.” etc., etc. ad infinitum.

#301 – One giant leap

One giant leapI don’t know why it’s taken so long, but I finally got around to watching In the Shadow of the Moon today.  A great piece of documentary filmmaking.

I guess in a way this is a companion piece to yesterday’s sketch:  science fiction vs. science fact.

P.S. Yes, I believe they actually did it.

#295 – Back to the salt mines

Back to the salt minesAfter 11 days away from work, that January 3rd alarm clock comes pretty painfully early.

#290 – Urban roost

Powerlines

Another day, another failure to think of anything to sketch.  Once again, I’m rescued by Flickr’s random and ever-changing art exhibition: “Interesting photos from the last 7 days.”  This is a simplified pen sketch inspired by this photo from Flickr user Peter French.

#285 – Achievement Unlocked!

Falling an oakCut down a tree for the first time today.  Gotta admit, that was pretty cool.  We’re up in the mountains for a woodcutting fundraiser held by the parents of a good friend.  The big woodcut is on Sunday, but today we needed to harvest another couple of their trees in order to have enough to work with.  It does make me think though: probably “plant a tree” should be the next achievement unlocked.

#283 – And the Darwin Award goes to…

Darwin AwardsI had to clear out a blocked downspout to keep up with all the rain we’ve been getting.  Today’s sketch celebrates my in-hindsight-super-idiotic decision to go up on the roof  in a thunderstorm carrying a 10-foot metal pole.  Thankfully, the worst case scenario depicted here didn’t actually play out.  I live to sketch another day!

#267 – Old Giza

Old GizaI was reading something this evening about Egypt, and the location was somehow stuck in my mind when it came time for today’s drawing.
