#334 – Rough riders

Eadweard Muybridge horsesI was trying to think of something to sketch for today, and for some reason Eadweard Muybridge’s classic horse-in-motion project came into my brain.  I’m pretty useless at drawing animals, so I figure I’d get some practice with some very rough sketches.  Of course, the real test would be to cut this drawing up, animate it, and see how well I did.

#332 – Seconds to Spare!

Seconds to spare! So here’s the full story behind yesterday’s sketch.  The assignment was to create a storyboard of about 15 frames to tell the story of my trip from home to school.  The instructor said that if it wasn’t a particularly dramatic story, we were free to embellish a little.  That was all the permission I needed.

#326 – Inching closer

People in environments 5Part 5 — finishing up the assignment for class.  (Rewind to Sketch #322 to see the whole set.)  Again, it looks like the idea generation was not happening in a vacuum: there seems to be a lot of linkages among these as well.

So anyway, there’s 30 under the belt.  Hey, I just got that much closer to my 10,000 drawings!

#325 – Picking up the pace

People in environments 4Part 4 of the 30 “people in environments” sketches for class.  I realized I needed to pick up the pace if I’m to have these done by next class.  Again, an odd assortment of ideas.  Many of these spun off of conversation topics with a few friends at happy hour.  And for several others, I have no idea (cemetary? farm workers? bird fancier? chin-up struggle?).  Brains are weird.

#311 – Folk’s wagon

VW bus

Don’t remember where the idea to draw this came from.  Must have been subconsciously planning for the year ahead, and the possible purchase of a stylish and super-safe family car.  Yeah.  That must have been it.

#308 – Scott’s Monkey Trial

Monkey 1

Monkey 2

Monkey 3

I recently watched an interesting presentation about creativity.  Within it is a creative exercise that challenges you to: a) imagine a picture of a bear; b) think of a different bear; c) dig deeper and attempt to conjure a third visual of a bear.  It gets increasingly difficult, but also requires creative thinking.

Anyway, I was thinking about that when I drew these.  I took the idea pretty literally and tried to come up with three different ways of drawing something.  In this case, I substituted the bear with a monkey (something that I’ve long been terrible at drawing from imagination).  It was an interesting challenge.  Later I noticed that my monkeys got progressively happier and more active.  I guess that’s a good sign?

#306 – Accidental composition

Nightcap

So I did the quick sketch of the flask, didn’t really like it, and flipped the page.  Did the even quicker sketch of the forlorn mountain man, didn’t really like it, and flipped the page.  Then I went back and looked at the two together.  Something seemed to match up, so I figured Photoshop should bring them together.
