#324 – A study in contrasts

People in environments 3Part 3 of the “people in enviroments” series for class.  It’s interesting how these ideas are all totally independent from one another, and yet seem connected when I look back at them.  Here, for example:  concern about the phone call vs. concern about the lack of phone calls, and trying to get in vs. trying to get out.

#323 – Looking down, looking up

People in environments 2Part 2 of the 30 sketches I started yesterday.  Again, the ones in this group seem to all have something in common (namely symmetrical hand placement).

I don’t know where most of these ideas originated.  Except the bottom left one — that I remember:  while I was sketching, iTunes landed on “The Girl From Ipanema.”

#322 – The bitter loneliness of public transit

People in environments 1Working on a series of drawings for class.  The assignment: 30 different scenes of people in environments, hopefully with some sort of emotional element to them.  Seems the first two had an accidental theme develop.

#320 – Run away! Run away!

Run away!Well, after a very stressful week of inspections and discussions with the city permit office, I uncovered some very helpful information today about our escrow property.  Information that convinces me to run in the opposite direction, before an earthquake knocks that sketchily propped-up house off its cracked and half-sunken foundation.  Turns out there’s a pretty significant reason for those level discrepancies I mentioned earlier.

#318 – Ups & downs

Roller coasterThis house-buying stuff is stressful.  I’ve been investigating the property, talking to people, getting an inspection today, etc.  From minute to minute the outlook seems to be constantly changing…  “Oh, that’s a good sign.”  “Oh, that sounds scary.”  “Oh, but that’s good news.”  “Oh, but that could be a big problem.” etc., etc. ad infinitum.

#316 – Not quite level

Not quite levelDay 1 of escrow on what could be our first house!  One thing though: some of the floors are a bit slanty.  This will require further investigation.

#312 – Might wanna get that looked at.

Blond boy

Just a little doodle at the end of the day.  I don’t know what happened to that one earlobe, but it kind of looks like I fell asleep a little while drawing.  Wouldn’t be the first time.

#308 – Scott’s Monkey Trial

Monkey 1

Monkey 2

Monkey 3

I recently watched an interesting presentation about creativity.  Within it is a creative exercise that challenges you to: a) imagine a picture of a bear; b) think of a different bear; c) dig deeper and attempt to conjure a third visual of a bear.  It gets increasingly difficult, but also requires creative thinking.

Anyway, I was thinking about that when I drew these.  I took the idea pretty literally and tried to come up with three different ways of drawing something.  In this case, I substituted the bear with a monkey (something that I’ve long been terrible at drawing from imagination).  It was an interesting challenge.  Later I noticed that my monkeys got progressively happier and more active.  I guess that’s a good sign?

#298 – The contest continues…

Tug-of-war

The corporate sellers of this house have countered again.  I’m running out of visual metaphors here.

P.S. Yes, that’s a hint of pregnancy belly showing on my wife.
