#141 – The homecoming

The homecomingThis is another quick sketch from the storyboard collection I’ve been doing at work.  The idea here is that rock samples would get collected from Mars, and then be put in a little rocket and sent back to Earth.  So here, a recovery team converges on the re-entry capsule, which has touched down somewhere out in the middle of nowhere.

Of course, the real deal would probably be more involved than four dudes in a pickup truck — but I’ll let someone else figure out that part.  And the whole part where samples are collected.  And that bit with the automated rocket launch from the surface of a planet millions of miles away.  I’ll just stick with the pencil sketches.

#139 – Branching out

Branches

This is the evolution of another little graphic idea for the web (commissioned by the lovely Mrs. Sketch 365).  And yes, I realize I’m pandering to my female readers with my recent posts of flowery branches, muscular shirtless men, and of course, Vanilla Ice.

#134 – Celestial mechanics

Storyboards

If you’ll permit me one more post of these: here are a couple more storyboard frames from my work project.  Of course, these only barely qualify as sketches.  But since I was focused on doing a bunch of these today, I figured I’d grab a couple to post.

#132 – Avian assembly

Bird sketchesI was just messing around this evening and did this quick page of icon ideas.  I think I like the bottom two elements best, as well as the far right one.  Of course, I realize now that I should have done one of these to go with it.

#127 – Need input

Rover eyesThis time, no redacted image!  Today at work, I was doing storyboards again for this future Mars mission — and here’s a frame I can actually show.  This is a made-up closeup of the rover’s main cameras, which sit on top of a rotating mast.  (In the real world, it would look something like this.)  What I’m trying to do in these storyboards is to give a little bit of personality to this robot.  And hey, if you’re gonna do that, why not borrow from one of the classics?

#124 – Architecture of the mind

MazeJuly 16: the long-awaiting opening day of “Inception.”  After seeing the 10 a.m. showing, my wife and I were talking about it all day.  I suppose it’s not surprising then, that at the end of the day, this is the sketch that came out of my brain.

#121 – Oops, I Did It Again.

Another redacted roverI’ve been sketching a lot of these storyboard illustrations at work, and so I figured I could just use one of them for the daily post.  Unfortunately, I realized that the rover pictured here is also based on some drawings that may or may not be public.  I did several of these today, but nothing else, so a redacted version will have to do.

P.S. Sorry to “play with your heart,” get “lost in the game,” etc.

#120 – Tools of the trade

Tools of the tradeI was working on some more digital illustrations today; these are just a few of the things I always have around.

#106 – Tall/Humor/Bike/Scooter

Logo concepts 2As part of the logo assignment from yesterday’s sketch, some of the other terms that came up were “tall,” “humor,” and “bike/scooter.”  These are a few of the very basic exploratory sketches based on those notions.  They also borrow heavily from my friend’s hilariously accurate description of me when I fold my 6’4″ frame onto my 125cc scooter: “You look like a trained bear on a tricycle.”

#105 – Neat/Precise/Linear

Logo concept 1For a class assignment on personal logo design, I was asked to come up with a list of words that describe me and or my general style.  After polling a few friends (and a spouse), the resounding (and not surprising) consensus revolved around neat/precise/linear/meticulous/exacting/perfectionist/etc.  This was one of dozens of quick brainstorm sketches that drew on those ideas.
