#306 – Accidental composition

Nightcap

So I did the quick sketch of the flask, didn’t really like it, and flipped the page.  Did the even quicker sketch of the forlorn mountain man, didn’t really like it, and flipped the page.  Then I went back and looked at the two together.  Something seemed to match up, so I figured Photoshop should bring them together.

#302 – Duck hunting equipment

Auburn helmetAfter watching the BCS title game tonight, I drew this as a tribute to Auburn’s win over Oregon.  I’d considered drawing something based on the mascots — something more needlessly visceral, like a tiger actually devouring a duck — but this was just a lot quicker and easier.

#293 – Jolly Good Fellow

Jolly good fellowWent to a surprise party tonight for a friend who has just finished law school like a champ.  I can’t imagine putting myself through something like that.  So cheers, Jason — enjoy that well-deserved drink!  Oh, and then the months of agonizing bar prep…

#292 – No spoilers

Inception totemInception is just one of those movies that gets stuck in your brain — as previously demonstrated.  I watched it again today for the second time, so of course it came out in today’s sketch.

#290 – Urban roost

Powerlines

Another day, another failure to think of anything to sketch.  Once again, I’m rescued by Flickr’s random and ever-changing art exhibition: “Interesting photos from the last 7 days.”  This is a simplified pen sketch inspired by this photo from Flickr user Peter French.

#287 – The chopping block

Woodcut

Spent most of the day with a couple dozen friends, chopping up trees into firewood.  (This of course included the tree from Sketch #285.)  It’s part of an annual fundraiser, and definitely one of the most fun Sundays of the year.  Of course, that means tomorrow is one of the most achy Mondays of the year…

#286 – Piper Down!

Piper Pacer

Heard a fascinating first-person story today from a man who ran out of fuel in his small plane over Alaska, and had to find a dirt road to put it down on, while operating with no engine.  That’s a presence of mind that’s difficult to imagine.  Of course, the story was stuck in my mind when sketch time rolled around.

#284 – The oil business

Oil pumpDrove up the Central Valley today — been a while since I did that.  On my way to the mountains for a good time this weekend.  In the absence of anything else to sketch, I drew one of these things (of which I passed a few today).

#280 – A good day

Awesome activitiesPretty much spent the whole day doing back-to-back stupid/awesome activities with friends.  The annual horror/delight of the “scrambled eggsnog” breakfast, an early matinee of TRON, some more LEGO assembly, filling my face with delicious tacos, and finally a collective screening of a bad B-movie.  It’s a pity days like this can’t last forever.

#278 – Comfort, food

StovetopTonight, my wife felt like making a great meal that she hasn’t made for a while.  Mmmmm….meatloaf.  But since I’ve already sketched meatloaf itself, I figured I’d go with some of the tools of the trade for today’s drawing.
