#107 – Red rocks

Waimea Canyon

On the beautiful island of Kauai this week for a little vacation.  On our first full day here, we went on a 12-mile hike around some of the state park areas in the northwest of the island.  This sketch was done at lunchtime, from an spot overlooking the north end of Waimea Canyon.  (For any other geography nerds, we were sitting right here.)

#104 – Anniversary “gift”

KitchenAid mixerJust bought my wife of these great mixers.  Of course, this “gift” is a lot like when Homer buys Marge a bowling ball with “Homer” inscribed on it.  But if you’ve enjoyed her excellent baked goods, you’ll know why I’d want to encourage their regular production.

#103 – Lysiwyg

Lis's hairWas feeling pretty lazy this evening, so I just knocked out a very simplified brush pen drawing of our dessert hostess for the evening.  Thanks, Lis!

#101 – Analog cursor

Analog cursorTomorrow at work I need to do an illustration of a hand that will be used in a demo video for a touchscreen application.  This was just a quick sketch to serve as a reference for the digital version.  Then again, maybe my giant hands aren’t the best models for this — might have to recruit someone else tomorrow.  Someone whose hand will fit on a sketchbook page.

#96 – All the worse to smell you with!

Five-minute head

My, what a peculiarly flat nose you have!  (Or at least, that’s how I’ve unfortunately rendered it!)

Yeah, this one got a little messed up.  But so did all the other drawings from this afternoons’ workshop.  I was having a pretty off day.  Called it quits once I decided this would have to do for today’s sketch.  I think this was either a 3- or  5-minute drawing.

#95 – Red(acted) Rover, Red(acted) Rover

RoverWhoops.  Based on some illustrations I have in a document at work, I drew this simplified sketch of a future Mars rover concept for the next decade.  Then I realized: I’m not sure whether that document has been publicly released yet. There’s about a billion to one chance that it’s a problem, but since a quick Google search didn’t turn up any images of this thing, I figured mine probably shouldn’t be the first one out there…

#94 – The Mystery Machine

The Mystery MachineOkay, so — the first person who can correctly identify what this thing does wins…oh, say, a dollar.  Wait, this may be super-easy.  This could be an ill-conceived contest…

#88 – Now in glorious High Definition!

Panasonic HDX900Just another slice of what my day was like.  I spent most of the morning behind one of these Panasonic HD cameras, for a live broadcast we were doing at work.  Fun fact: just one of these things costs significantly more than any car I’ve ever owned.

As a side note: I was really uninspired to draw this evening, and even filled a sketchbook page with drawings I ended up hating.  They were quick pen drawings done while looking in the mirror (like yesterday’s), but of different facial expressions.  I was really bored and frustrated with them.  Then I sat down and got out different paper and some Copic markers (which I hadn’t used in about three weeks).  Switching up the style and tools made a huge difference.  Even though I made some frustrating mistakes on this one, I was ultimately much happier with it than the others, and had way more fun doing it.

#87 – Why the long face?

Two-minute self portraitI almost forgot to do a sketch today — but tragedy was averted at the last second with this two-minute self portrait.  Not very accurate, but certainly less creepy than the last one!

#86 – The shirtless mentalist

Pensive guyAnother sketch from an Art Center drawing workshop.  I couldn’t really tell what to make of this pose.  Is this stress?  Contemplation?  Telekinesis?  If only his back weren’t turned!
