#323 – Looking down, looking up

People in environments 2Part 2 of the 30 sketches I started yesterday.  Again, the ones in this group seem to all have something in common (namely symmetrical hand placement).

I don’t know where most of these ideas originated.  Except the bottom left one — that I remember:  while I was sketching, iTunes landed on “The Girl From Ipanema.”

#321 – Apply grease liberally to palms

Goodfellas pt. 2Homework time: a continuation of the Goodfellas storyboard from the other day.  If you want to follow along: kid appears before judge; mob lawyer flashes judge a look; kid walks free; De Niro slips kid some cash for a job well done in not ratting out the others; De Niro and kid exit courtroom into welcoming arms of mob boss Paul Sorvino and his cadre of ne’er-do-wells.  (Followed by the next establishing shot of the Idlewild [later JFK] airport.)

#291 – Crosstour? Crossed out.

Crosstour

We went to test drive a Honda Accord Crosstour today.  That V6 sure is nice, with 100+ more horses than I’m used to.  And the sweeping (albeit polarizing) body styling and larger wheels are good too — but unfortunately they combine to sabotage the rear storage compartment (which is pretty disappointing for a car of that size).  And there, folks, is my first printed car review, clocking in at a powerfully informative three sentences.  Take that, Edmunds.com!  I shall soon be crowned king of online automotive advice!

#286 – Piper Down!

Piper Pacer

Heard a fascinating first-person story today from a man who ran out of fuel in his small plane over Alaska, and had to find a dirt road to put it down on, while operating with no engine.  That’s a presence of mind that’s difficult to imagine.  Of course, the story was stuck in my mind when sketch time rolled around.

#254 – Tonka truck

Toyota FJ CruiserMy friend from yesterday’s sketch was actually admitted to the hospital for surgery.  Thankfully it went well, but since he was drugged up with a dead arm, I went by the hospital and picked up his car for him.  For better or worse, it’s the absolute opposite of what I’m used to driving.

#232 – Road-almost-kill

ScreechAs I was heading in to work today, I rounded a corner and suddenly met a yappy little dog making a bee-line for my front wheel.  It’s lucky it wasn’t a cat, or I might not have been motivated to be quite so responsive with the brakes.  (Kidding!  Sort of!)

#229 – To a “T”

Model TMy mind was stuck in a different era today, after Fish Hunter Phil sent me a link to this fascinating story from a century ago.  Seriously, if you have a little time, go listen to that story — it’s quite a piece of work.

#215 – Cut your losses

EdselSo this was just based on a random photo I found on Flickr.  Had a bit of trouble with the figure in this drawing.  I kept erasing bits, modifying the proportions and so on, but it kept not working right.  Eventually, I realized I had to erase her completely and start again from scratch.  How appropriate, it then seemed, that she should be standing in front of an Edsel…

#211 – Special Delivery

Earth approach

At work, I’ve returned to the animation project I was working on, and have been sketching a few more storyboard frames.  Here, the orbiter comes back to Earth, to drop off a sample of material collected on Mars.  Of course, the drawing is nothing special, but the accomplishment it represents sure would be something.

#203 – Homeward bound

Heading homeAfter two great weeks abroad (and one long travel day today), we’re back in California.  A quick scribble before bed.
