Part 2 of the 30 sketches I started yesterday. Â Again, the ones in this group seem to all have something in common (namely symmetrical hand placement).
I don’t know where most of these ideas originated. Â Except the bottom left one — that I remember: Â while I was sketching, iTunes landed on “The Girl From Ipanema.”

Homework time: a continuation of the Goodfellas storyboard from the other day. Â If you want to follow along:Â kid appears before judge; mob lawyer flashes judge a look; kid walks free; De Niro slips kid some cash for a job well done in not ratting out the others; De Niro and kid exit courtroom into welcoming arms of mob boss Paul Sorvino and his cadre of ne’er-do-wells. Â (Followed by the next establishing shot of the Idlewild [later JFK] airport.)

We went to test drive a Honda Accord Crosstour today. Â That V6 sure is nice, with 100+ more horses than I’m used to. Â And the sweeping (albeit polarizing) body styling and larger wheels are good too — but unfortunately they combine to sabotage the rear storage compartment (which is pretty disappointing for a car of that size). Â And there, folks, is my first printed car review, clocking in at a powerfully informative three sentences. Â Take that, Edmunds.com! Â I shall soon be crowned king of online automotive advice!

Heard a fascinating first-person story today from a man who ran out of fuel in his small plane over Alaska, and had to find a dirt road to put it down on, while operating with no engine. Â That’s a presence of mind that’s difficult to imagine. Â Of course, the story was stuck in my mind when sketch time rolled around.

My friend from yesterday’s sketch was actually admitted to the hospital for surgery. Thankfully it went well, but since he was drugged up with a dead arm, I went by the hospital and picked up his car for him. For better or worse, it’s the absolute opposite of what I’m used to driving.

As I was heading in to work today, I rounded a corner and suddenly met a yappy little dog making a bee-line for my front wheel. Â It’s lucky it wasn’t a cat, or I might not have been motivated to be quite so responsive with the brakes. Â (Kidding! Â Sort of!)

My mind was stuck in a different era today, after Fish Hunter Phil sent me a link to this fascinating story from a century ago.  Seriously, if you have a little time, go listen to that story — it’s quite a piece of work.

So this was just based on a random photo I found on Flickr. Â Had a bit of trouble with the figure in this drawing. Â I kept erasing bits, modifying the proportions and so on, but it kept not working right. Â Eventually, I realized I had to erase her completely and start again from scratch. Â How appropriate, it then seemed, that she should be standing in front of an Edsel…

At work, I’ve returned to the animation project I was working on, and have been sketching a few more storyboard frames. Â Here, the orbiter comes back to Earth, to drop off a sample of material collected on Mars. Â Of course, the drawing is nothing special, but the accomplishment it represents sure would be something.

After two great weeks abroad (and one long travel day today), we’re back in California. Â A quick scribble before bed.
